Public 'has nothing to fear from private benefit probes'

THE PUBLIC has nothing to fear from moves by the government to bring in private sector agencies to hunt down benefits cheats, an Edinburgh-based specialist has claimed

Controversial moves by Prime Minister David Cameron to save up to 5.2 billion a year by targeting benefits cheats was welcomed by the Scottish company Data Discoveries, which specialises in tracking down people who try to defraud taxpayers.

When Mr Cameron made the announcement earlier this week that he would bring in outside agencies to tackle benefit fraud concerns were raised about data protection and whether he was focusing on the right area to save money.

But David Aitken, technical director of Data Discoveries, told The Scotsman that many millions can be saved. He added: "Information we use is publicly available or has been collected with the consent of individuals, for wider use."
