Protest song event is ready to raise its voice

THE Edinburgh People's Festival is to celebrate Robert Burns' 250th anniversary with a musical tribute to "tunes which changed the world".

Musicians Fiona Keenan, Lee Paterson and Wendy Weatherby will join bands Townhouse and Enradgey in the Nelson Hall, St Leonards, on Saturday for an evening of songs of protest.

People's Festival chairman Colin Fox highlighted the singing of Sam Cooke's A Change is Gonna Come and Woody Guthrie's This Land is Your Land at the inauguration of US President Barack Obama.

He said: "This year more than most we have cause to reflect on how the power of music and song can change the world.

"The People's Festival presents a wonderful array of talent using various musical genres to show how music and song has changed the world."
