Programme launched for Edinburgh Military Tattoo

Musicians and performers from across the globe are to descend on the capital this week to take part in the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

The programme for the world-famous event was launched in Edinburgh today.

A highlight of the festival season, the tattoo begins on Friday and will run until August 27.

This year, traditional favourites such as the massed pipes and drums will be joined by the 90-strong Brazilian Marine Corps Martial Band and the German Mountain Army Band, among others.

Staged against the back-drop of Edinburgh Castle, the show's theme this year is 'of the sea'.

Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop said: "Edinburgh's spectacular military tattoo is one of the highlights of the festival calendar.

"A wonderful mix of music, song, dance and drama - it is a true celebration of the creative talent from Scotland and around the world - attracting thousands of visitors from across the globe."

This year the tattoo will be housed in a new 16 million amphitheatre.

Chief executive and producer, Brigadier David Allfrey, said: "The international flavour of the tattoo works so well.

"This year, we are able to follow imaginary trade winds and the ocean's currents around the world, showcasing the skills and culture of our friends and allies, wherever we touch land."
