Private e-mail addresses sent out in error

A SCOTS council has been forced to apologise after sending out the e-mail addresses of thousands of private landlords to everyone who received an electronic newsletter.

An investigation has also been launched into whether the blunder contravenes the Data Protection Act.

It will centre on Scottish Borders Council's housing strategy team, which is involved in the registration of private landlords in the region.

Yesterday, one landlord described the error as "a gross invasion of my privacy."

Last week, a member of staff e-mailed as an attachment the latest edition of the council's Private Landlord's Newsletter to 3,148 individuals and organisations on their register.
