Princess's step-brother among island victims
THE step-brother of the crown princess of Norway was one of the first victims of the massacre on Utoya island.
Trond Berntsen was among those killed when Breivik opened fire at the Labour party camp there. An off-duty police officer, he had been hired to provide private security at the island retreat, and was one of the first killed by the white-supremacist gunman. His death was announced by a spokeswoman for Norway's royal family.
Mr Berntsen was the son of the second husband of Princess Mette-Marit's mother. The princess entered the royal family in 2001 after her marriage to crown prince Haakon.
Others who lost their lives in the massacre included Tore Eikeland, 21, president of the Hordaland branch of the left-wing group AUF, whom prime minister Jens Stoltenberg described as "one of our most talented youth politicians".
Also among the dead was Simon Saeboe, 19, who posed with the prime minister in 2009.
