Princess marks scout century

THE Princess Royal will be in Edinburgh next week to celebrate the centenary of Scottish scouting.

She will be honouring holders of the Queen's or King's Scout Award at a reception at the Palace of Holyroodhouse on Friday.

More than 500 people are expected at the reception and guests will include people who gained the award as far back as 1935 and from as far afield as the USA and Canada.

The Queen's Scout honour is the ultimate award for young people in the scouting movement.

Young people have to undertake a series of challenges including organising and completing an expedition, serving communities and developing knowledge and skills on a chosen subject.

The award was introduced as the King's Scout Badge in 1909.
