Princess to mark Royal Oak sinking
A WREATH to mark the 70th anniversary of the sinking of HMS Royal Oak is expected to be laid on the waters of Scapa Flow by the Princess Royal on Wednesday.
The memorial event follows a service in St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall yesterday to remember the 833 lives lost when the battleship was torpedoed by a German U-boat.
There was also a parade including members of the Royal British Legion and youth organisations.
Many of the 400 survivors were badly burned in the 1939 attack.
It was one of the greatest naval losses of life, which dealt Britain an early blow to morale only one month after the start of the Second World War.
Princess Anne will take part in Wednesday's ceremony on HMS Penzance, a mine hunter.
