Primary school annex to be turned into flats

A PRIMARY school building in Colinton is to be transformed into new homes and apartments.

Plans have been lodged with the council for the scheme, which would see the Bonaly primary school annex on Thorburn Road converted into four flats.

The scheme has been masterminded by Edinburgh-based developer Sundial Properties, which also plans to build five new homes in the school grounds.

The project has been designed to create a new use for the site, which is due to be left vacant when the school relocates to new prem-ises on Bonaly Grove as part of the PPP2 private finance initiative.

Community leaders and residents had criticised the decision to sell the building last year, as they believed it should have been used as a new community hall.

Around 400 people joined a petition set up by local councillor Jason Rust against the move but the campaign failed and the site was eventually sold to Sundial.

The plans for the new homes are expected to be discussed by councillors over the coming months.
