Praise for pilot as bird strike forces jet into crash-landing
A RYANAIR pilot was praised yesterday after making an emergency landing following a massive bird strike.
The pilot, who has not been named, brought the Boeing 737 down safely after dozens of starlings were sucked into the engines.
Two cabin crew and three passengers suffered minor injuries in the incident which happened at Rome's Ciampino Airport.
Passengers aboard the flight spoke of hearing a loud bang and the plane shaking violently as it approached the airport from Frankfurt.
The pilot managed to land on the runway, but the aircraft slid off at the end and those onboard were evacuated.
Witnesses spoke of seeing streaks of blood and feathers along one side of the plane. The airport remained shut for the rest of the day.
