On reading George Byron’s letter (18 December) concerning the Post Office staff asking about the contents of packets being posted, I enquired at our local Post Office.
I was told that the reason for this is due not to the Post Office but to the airlines, which insist on it. Nowadays much mail goes by air. On the matter of a person telling a lie about the contents, I was told that all items are checked through a scanner and anything suspicious would be destroyed. Other carriers of course don’t use planes but vans.
