Pope's visit helps boost congregations in Capital

NUMBERS attending Catholic church services across the city were boosted thanks to the visit of Pope Benedict XVI.

Local priests said there had been a notable swelling in congregation, with some churchgoers forced to stand outside to be part of Mass last weekend.

It has been hailed as the most notable change in service numbers since an influx to Edinburgh of largely catholic eastern Europeans earlier in the decade, with hundreds more going through the doors.

In one of the city's biggest Catholic churches, St Patrick's in the Old Town, it is hoped the papal visit will have a long-term impact.

Father Michael Henesy, the parish priest there, said: "People were commenting on the increase of our congregation at the weekend.

"We didn't do a headcount or anything, it was more of an impression we had.

"The visit overall has been a tremendous boost for us and will have a lasting effect."
