Poorest areas warned over post offices
CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save under-threat post offices in the Capital have warned that the poorest areas of the city are likely to be the hardest hit by any closures.
Royal Mail bosses are due to publish a list next month of branches in Edinburgh which they want to shut as part of the nationwide closure programme.
Edinburgh East MP Gavin Strang said his own constituency had taken "quite a hammering" in the last round of closures. He said: "When a local post office is closed it is very often the least well-off in our society who lose out.
"Furthermore, it has all too often been the branches in the hardest-off areas that are earmarked for closure.
"Like any service, the Post Office needs to continue to adapt, but local branches have a vital role in our communities."
