Youngsters urged to exercise more

The Scottish Government has launched an initiative to encourage more children to take regular exercise.

The “Take Life On” campaign will use press, TV, radio and a dedicated website to help spread awareness of the benefits of physical activity.

The programme is part of a number of schemes ministers are launching ahead of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Since this Socialist Nationalist Party government so believes in the efficacy of nagging, I look forward to the "National Tidy Your Room" campaign.

They'd do better to cut the buses and taxis for kids who live within 3 miles of their schools.

I look forward to the leaflets, website and press releases backed up by no staff, no resources and a team of mealy mouthed socioa science graduates leading a meaningless campaign that will quietly be put down after a year with no-one getting the blame for the failure........excellent.

#1 brianwci -----------------------------------------------Oh so true - fear of the almost non-existent bogeyman and a culture of spurious litigation will hamper any attempts to encourage kids to get out and about. Statistically the chances of any one child being molested or worse by a stranger is all but negligible - most attacks are by family members or friends of the family. As for Health & Safety legislation - life is full of risks, accidents happen no matter how much care is taken - surely the risk of injury from an accident whilst exercising and getting out and about is better than the almost certain death caused by obesity and a sedentary lifestyle?

But their SNP colleagues running Dundee have cut PE cover? How does that work?

Instead of useless exhortation, send them to a farther away school and make them walk. A brisk walk is great exercise for all age groups.

Anyone urging my age group to exercise more as kids, or indeed exercise at all would have been certified. We ran about from morning till night. Kids and exercise were synonymous. But then men became demonised and suddenly kids weren't allowed out for fear of 'strangers' ......i.e. men. Said strangers began to abandon their voluntary posts in droves with the result every single organisation where kids could go to learn social skills and run about even more lost members as it lost its leaders. Kids were suddenly being ferried to school in the family car, clogging up roads, polluting the air and losing valuable socialisation skills. Their computer skills increased as did their eating skills. Obesity, rudeness, indolence became the skills of the 90s and noughties. In short, re-instate men, stop fearing what might happen and start curing what is happening and before you know it the fat will begin to melt away and kids will get their childhood back.
