Walk of Fame plan laid out for Royal Mile

EDINBURGH'S Royal Mile could become a Hollywood-style "Walk of Fame" with plaques honouring Scotland's cultural greats, according to an SNP backbencher.

South of Scotland MSP Aileen Campbell said Scots artists and cultural stars from Lulu to John Byrne, Robbie Coltrane to Irvine Welsh, and Sean Connery to Muriel Spark should be celebrated in a Scottish Walk of Fame.

She has put forward her proposals to culture minister Fiona Hyslop, tourism minister Jim Mather, Historic Scotland and Visit Scotland.

Ms Campbell, a member of the Scottish Parliament's culture committee, said: "Scotland has made a huge contribution to the world and it is only right that we celebrate the success Scots have achieved at home and abroad.

"A 'Scottish Walk of Fame' could showcase these sons and daughters of Scotland and create an amazing cultural map of our country.

"Plaques could be placed around Scotland on buildings or streets in places of significance to the recipient, or gathered on the major streets of Scotland's towns and city's like the Royal Mile or Sauchiehall Street.

"It could be just like the Walk of Fame in Hollywood."
