Tory candidate for Darling's seat resigns from local party
THE Tory candidate due to stand against Chancellor Alistair Darling at the next General Election has quit.
The Evening News revealed on Monday that David Potts, a councillor from South Tyneside, was facing deselection by Conservatives in Edinburgh South-West who were unhappy at his alleged failure to turn up at events.
But now Mr Potts, 25, has written to the local party saying he is resigning.
In his letter, he said: "You will be aware of the health issues concerning my father, which has challenged my ability to service the constituency as much as I would have hoped."
He also cited "strong commitments in Tyneside".
Inez Paisley, chairwoman of Edinburgh South-West Conservative Association, said he had "amicably resigned", and that she hoped another candidate could be selected as soon as possible.
