Tories call for offenders to wear uniform
OFFENDERS carrying out work in the community as part of their sentences should wear high visibility uniforms, the Conservatives suggested yesterday.
The party's justice spokesman, Glasgow MSP Bill Aitken, said the move would raise public awareness about criminals working in their communities, and remind offenders they were being punished for breaking the law.
The Scottish Government last week announced an overhaul of the system, which will see fewer low-risk offenders sent to prison.
Mr Aitken said: "We acceptthat in some cases community sentences are appropriate. But we believe the public should be aware of the situation at all times."
A spokesman for justice secretary Kenny MacAskill said: "We have been piloting new ways of making the work more visible to communities and will act on the results."
