Scottish independence: ‘Heed law, not assertions’

  • by SCOTT MACNAB

The rule of law must not be ignored in the independence debate in favour of “assertions”, Lord Wallace has warned.

The former deputy first minister said there are major legal questions posed by the constitutional debate that must be properly considered.

It follows revelations that the SNP had not sought legal advice on Scotland’s position in the EU after independence, prior to the signing of the Edinburgh Agreement.

“Some may now regret being quite so forceful in their assertions about Scotland’s continuing membership of the EU,” he told an audience of leading legal figures in the capital’s Signet library.
