Scottish independence: Focus on referendum question

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is due to hold talks on the independence referendum with Scottish Secretary Michael Moore.

The talks in Edinburgh today are expected to focus on what Scots will be asked in the referendum in 2014 and whether there will be a straight yes or no question on Scottish independence.

A meeting is expected in the next few weeks between First Minister Alex Salmond and Prime Minister David Cameron to finalise an agreement on the referendum process.

The SNP government had hinted at backing a possible third option on more powers for Holyrood on the referendum ballot paper. However, the UK coalition has opposed the idea and, after talks between Ms Sturgeon and Scotland Office minister David Mundell last week, claims there is now a “definite” move towards a deal on one question.

Mr Moore, pictured, yesterday said: “I believe we can reach an agreement on an independence referendum that will be legal, fair and decisive.”
