A FIREFIGHTERS for Yes group has become the latest special interest group to declare its backing for Scottish independence.

The group has cited its “fears of privatisation of public service” as one of the key reasons for coming out for a Yes vote ahead of the referendum on 18 September.

Yes Scotland has already launched groups such as Lawyers for Yes and English Scots for Yes as part of its sectoral campaigns for independence.

Martin Brown, a firefighter from Falkirk, based in Easterhouse, said: “I find it worrying that the Westminster train of thought on privatisation will lead to a level of service that is purely financially based, resulting in the fire service becoming an unaffordable luxury for a great number of people.”

Ewen Macsween, based in Springburn, Glasgow, said: “I’m voting Yes to keep public services in public hands and protect them from cuts; to rid Scotland of Trident nuclear weapons and to make better use of our mineral assets and renewable energy supplies.”
