Monday 6 August: Boris Johnson’s soaring popularity, gaffes and all, has some saying he poses a threat to David Cameron as Tory leader.

Tuesday 7 August: A personal blow to Nick Clegg, as he announces he is abandoning plans to reform the House of Lords in light of the Conservatives “breaking the coalition contract” they had made to back them.

Wednesday 8 August: Education Secretary Mike Russell comes under fire of accusations of dumbing down as Scottish pupils achieve record pass rates again.

Thursday 9 August: Bank of England governor Sir Mervyn King keeps a close watch over Chancellor George Osborne as he “sows the seeds of recovery”.

Friday 10 August: David Cameron and George Osborne find that gold medals won’t cut it as currency in the fight against the deficit.
