2014 Commonwealth Games criteria anger refugee body

SCOTLAND’S refugee body has criticised Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games organisers as “adding insult to injury” to asylum seekers for not allowing them to work as volunteers during the event.

The Scottish Refugee Council expressed anger at the Games criteria to qualify as a volunteer, which states that candidates must be eligible to work in the UK.

Gary Christie, of the Scottish Refugee Council, said: “We are disappointed and frustrated at this decision.”

A Glasgow 2014 spokesman said: “Due to the expected high volumes of applications and number of interviews to be conducted, Glasgow 2014 require that all volunteer applicants meet all the eligibility criteria during the application period from January to February 2013.”
