COMEDY boss Tommy Sheppard has been selected as the SNP’s candidate to fight the seat of Edinburgh East in May’s General Election.

Mr Sheppard, who works for the Stand Comedy Club in Edinburgh and the Scottish Comedy Agency, is a former deputy general secretary of the Scottish Labour Party.

Nationalist members in the Edinburgh East constituency chose Mr Sheppard as their candidate for the seat, which was won by Labour’s Sheila Gilmore with a 9,181 majority at the 2010 General Election.

Mr Sheppard, confirmed on social media site Twitter he had been selected, stating that he had: “Just heard from SNP HQ that I am the candidate for @eastsnp. My thanks to all those who voted for me - and to my fellow nominees. Let’s win.”

SNP Westminster leader Angus Robertson, in a separate Tweet, said: “Congrats to @TommySheppard on his selection as @theSNP candidate in Edinburgh East for the UK election #GE2015 #VoteSNP.”
