Tax plans would 'hurt students'
MANY students in Edinburgh would be worse off under SNP plans to replace council tax with a local income tax, Lothians Tory MSP Gavin Brown claimed today.
He said the new tax would lead to working students being forced to pay despite the fact they do not have to pay council tax.
He said: "Currently, students do not pay council tax. It is estimated a student earning the minimum wage would pay if throughout the year they work 19 hours a week or more on average.
"There are many students in Edinburgh who do just that and they will be hurt."
But Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said students would gain from the scrapping of the graduate endowment charge.
