Squirrel 'tsar' to the rescue of at-risk reds

A SQUIRREL tsar has been appointed to help protect Scotland's red squirrels.

Juliet Robinson will establish a network of volunteers in the north of Scotland to monitor populations of red squirrels and the larger, more aggressive greys which threaten their habitat.

The move was announced today by the Forestry Commission, which will part-fund the three-year contract. Other funding will come from the National Lottery, Scottish Natural Heritage, Highland Council and the EU.

Ms Robinson said: "I am really excited about this new role. I will work closely with landowners, foresters, gamekeepers, schoolchildren, volunteers and the wider public to ensure the Highlands continues to protect the red squirrel."
