SNP welcomes Lib Dem move on referendum
THE SNP has welcomed the Liberal Democrats' decision to rethink their opposition to a referendum on independence.
The Evening News revealed yesterday that senior Lib Dem MSP Ross Finnie has been appointed to conduct an internal review of the policy and an extra session has been scheduled for the party's Scottish conference on 30 October to discuss the issue.
The move came after Edinburgh North & Leith candidate Kevin Lang came out in favour of a referendum at the Lib Dem conference in Bournemouth last month and was backed by former MSP and minister George Lyon.
Lib Dem support in the Scottish Parliament would be enough to get the SNP's referendum bill passed.
A spokesman for First Minister Alex Salmond welcomed the review. He said all three of the main UK parties had got themselves "tied in knots" over the referendum.
