Scottish independence: Celebrities and politicians ready to launch their yes campaign

Celebrities and political figures are to launch “the biggest community-based campaign in Scotland’s history” for independence.

The campaign is designed to build a groundswell of support for an independent Scotland ahead of the 2014 referendum.

The organisers, whose names have not yet been revealed, have convened “Scots from all walks of life” including “leading stars, community and political figures” to sign a Yes Declaration at Edinburgh’s Cineworld cinema on Friday.

The campaign aims to set out “why being independent offers the best future for people across Scotland”.

The event will see the launch of the Yes Scotland website and will feature contributions from Scottish cultural figures.

Opposition groups are already gearing up to fight the independence campaign, with Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie calling for the SNP to work with all political parties to devise a fair question.

He said: “It’s in the interest of whoever wins the referendum to have the acceptance of those who lose. A critical part of that is a fair question accepted by everyone. Yet, the SNP seem to think only they should determine the question that is asked.”

SNP campaigns director Angus Robertson said: “These are exciting times for Scotland as we work to build a better nation.”
