Scotland's civil liberties 'safest in UK'
THE SNP today welcomed a new report which claimed civil liberties were safer in Scotland than south of the border.
The human rights group Privacy International recently published its privacy rankings for 2007, and for the first time it ranked Scotland separately from England and Wales.
The UK scored 1.4 on Privacy International's scale – the lowest score of any of the European countries.
This meant the organisation gave it a black ranking, describing it as being an "endemic surveillance society".
But while England and Wales were given a score of 1.4 Scotland was given a mark of 2.5.
Privacy International considered whether or not countries had identity cards and the use of data-sharing and video surveillance when compiling the report.
The group also considered other factors, including the monitoring of people at work and government access to data.
