Spice is right as restaurant wins award

AN award-winning curry restaurant in the Capital has been named as named the best of its kind in Scotland.

Britannia Spice in Leith was selected for the honour by judges from the Guild of Bangladeshi Restaurateurs, which represents more than 9000 eateries in the UK.

The restaurant, situated near the former royal yacht Britannia, was jointly opened in 1998 by Dr Wali Tasar Uddin, the honorary consul-general for Bangladesh in Scotland, and businessman Ranil Saparamadu.

In 2001, it won the coveted Les Routiers award for Newcomer of the Year and was the only Scottish curry restaurant to reach the top 30 of the Best in Britain awards in June this year.

The awards, held in London and hosted by the Channel 4 news presenter Krishnan Guru-Murthy, are the first organised by the Bangladeshi restaurant industry, which represents 95 per cent of curry houses and employ 70,000 people.
