Rising star of Lib Dems to go for top job
LIBERAL Democrat rising star Nick Clegg is set to announce his leadership bid tomorrow.
The Home Affairs spokesman's move follows his main rival Chris Huhne throwing his hat in the ring to succeed Sir Menzies Campbell yesterday. The 53-year-old said: "I've decided to give it a go."
And now 40-year-old Mr Clegg - seen by many at Westminster as the favourite - is ready to follow suit.
Sheffield Hallam MP Mr Clegg will make his announcement in his constituency tomorrow.
Other possible runners include party manifesto writer Steve Webb from the party's left and Birmingham backbencher John Hemming.
Former Lib Dem leader Charles Kennedy has said it is "highly unlikely" he would stand again, but added: "You should never say never in politics, but as close to never as you can get."
Stand-in leader and Treasury Spokesman Vincent Cable ruled himself out, saying that at 64 he was too old to succeed 66-year-old Sir Menzies.
Transport spokesman Susan Kramer and Elections Co-ordinator Ed Davey have also said they will not be running. But Mr Davey has backed Mr Clegg for the job.
