Profile: Academic who advised government on transport policy

PROFESSOR Iain Docherty was a non-executive director of the Scottish Government’s Transport Scotland agency from 2006 until last year.

The body is responsible for most governmental transport policy across Scotland, from trunk roads to the £1 billion ScotRail franchise – Scotland’s biggest public-sector contract.

It also covers ferries, freight, free bus travel for certain groups and road safety.

Prof Docherty has written several books on transport and is currently a co-investigator on two major Research Council projects on sustainable transport and low carbon transitions.

He is professor of policy and governance at Glasgow University.

His research and teaching cover public administration, institutional change and city and regional competitiveness.

Prof Docherty’s particular focus is on the structures and processes of local and regional governance, policies for delivering improved economic performance and environmental sustainability, and the development and implementation of strategic planning and transport policies.

Prof Docherty also works with, and acts as, an adviser on strategic policy issues to a range of private-sector, governmental and other organisations including several in the UK, United States, Canada and Sweden.

He was appointed this year and was also named as one of the inaugural members of the Royal Society of Edinburgh’s Young Academy of Scotland.
