Poll shows low Labour support

A NEW opinion poll makes more worrying reading for Prime Minister Gordon Brown, with Labour trailing 21 points behind the Tories.

The ComRes survey shows Labour are set to lose badly in the next general election.

The UK-wide poll put Labour on 25 per cent, with the Tories on 46 per cent and the Liberal Democrats on 16 per cent.

Some 11 per cent of those who "generally speaking" thought of themselves as Labour said they would vote Liberal Democrat, while 8 per cent said they would vote for the Conservatives.

Only 72 per cent of those who identified themselves as Labour supporters and likely to take part in the next election intended to vote for the party.

Tory leader David Cameron, however, also came under pressure yesterday from members of his own party to commit to big cuts in tax and spending.
