Pledge to safeguard Scots food supplies
THE SNP government yesterday attempted to reassure the public that every effort would be made to safeguard food supplies after a report highlighted Scotland's dependence on imports.
Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead claimed making sure food supplies were maintained was at the heart of government policy.
A report published last week suggested food supplies to Scotland would be seriously disrupted by major emergencies, such as flooding and health scares.
Lochhead said the report, analysing the food supply chain, will be used to help firms prepare for future scenarios.
"International food shortages, the economic downturn and the recent G8 Summit have undoubtedly pushed the issues of food security, access and affordability up the agenda," Lochhead said.
"Our response to previous emergencies – such as Grangemouth – illustrates the importance of being properly prepared for disruption.
"It's important that we act on the report's recommendations and provide businesses with the guidance and support they need to prepare for potentially difficult scenarios."
Lochhead said Scotland's food and drink producers have an important part to play in both national and world food security.
