Opposition fails to see humour in MSP’s Chinese yuan quip
SNP MSP Christina McKelvie said that an independent Scotland would have the “choice” of adopting the Chinese yuan as its currency.
Ms McKelvie said during questioning that the Chinese yuan could be one of the options for the currency of an independent Scotland.
She said: “Yes, well, absolutely we could choose that and that is the whole point about self-determination because it will be our choice and the issue around about transferable currencies is one that will be debated and investigated.”
Labour MSP Michael McMahon yesterday dismissed Ms McKelvie’s claims as “nonsense” and “utterly bonkers”.
He said: “It would be funny, if it was not so serious. Trade, interest rates and people’s savings, mortgages and pensions all depend on what currency we use. The SNP needs to stop treating serious issues like this as if it is a game.
“The SNP’s confusion over the currency seems to deepen by the day.”
“We’ve been told by the SNP that a separate Scotland would join the euro, keep sterling, introduce a brand new currency, use the dollar and now even the Chinese yuan.”
Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson said: “The SNP’s position on what currency a separate Scotland would adopt is all over the place and changes by the day.”

Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 01:46 AMRe Kinghob: " Quite the reverse - there is much bitterness......." based on what? Is this alleged bitterness based on what they are spoon fed about Scotland in their media or does England (or your English friends) have a genuine reason to be bitter towards Scotland about something rather than westminster? Well these particular friends are degree educated and in the education sector or university lecturers. Perhaps this is bad and proves nothing except they are well read from a variety of sources on-line and in print and are mostly left wing. Bitterness is just there - I have no idea exactly how it was nutured perhaps they have been spoon fed.....but they are normally discerning feeders. I have many Scottish and indeed Welsh and Irish friends too for that matter and we discuss this important issue regularly. There is broad opinion and we value and respect each other's opinion. However insidious propaganda can seep in from all over and whether you tune in and connect with it can depend on previously entrenched views, prejudice or innate bias for a position. Clearly there are entrenched views on both sides and these will be unlikely to change in any independence referendum. It is the middle ground that will decide this vote and success here will depend partly on the effectiveness of the propaganda machine in both camps as well as, I hope, reasoned arguments. I have to admire Salmond he is extremely canny in nearly everything he does and behaves like he is already the president of Scotland exuding gravitas and importance and speaking almost as if Scotland was independent already with positive re-inforcement of nationhood all the time and continued more subtle inluences. He is ALWAYS on message. Thirty years ago when I first went to a Scottish University I really did feel i was in a different country - legal system, bank note design, architecture, accents, school system etc etc and there was strong anti-English sentiment then too. Scotland clearly already is a country of course. Since then things have been exacerbated and we are now at this cross-roads where the future relationship within these isles between Scotland and England will be set-out. I realise that it does not matter what I say or how I say it as certain SNP members will be able to interpret it in a way to suit their preconceptions of victimhood and believe in English hegemony, need for"freedom" to caste off the English Yoke when I naievely thought it was actually a UNION etc. We live in a democracy and Scotland CAN vote to be independent. I just hope that by the time of the referendum reasoned, just and sensible arguments about the issues, policies, implications (financial and otherwise) are clearly set out. In the end however the vote will also be emotional as we are emotional beings so if Scotland has an emotional heart for independence and pragmatism and self-interest is relegated then so be it.

Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 01:02 AMOh dear we appear to have found another rabid and humorless unionist in 'Vote No'.....! The whole point about self-determination is we can make our own choices...you maybe feart of that but im not! ...and since you mention incompetence in one of your many posts do you want to discuss whats going on in Glasgow? Or how about new labours performance in Stirling? Maybe South Lanarkshire?
Vote 'NO'
Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 12:44 AMEven more unbelievable is Salmond missing the opportunity to invite the Chinese to stop off in Scotland. Oh, what a coup that would have been. Trump-ing by a huge margin anything a mischievous response to a non-request to the Calcutta Cup match anyway of the week.
Vote 'NO'
Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 11:32 PM21 But no comment on McKelvie's ignorance? Million, Billion? What's the difference..... Unbelievable.
Vote 'NO'
Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 11:30 PM27 Yet the main point, pointing out of McKelvie's ignorance about which currency goes with which country isn't worth commenting on?
Vote 'NO'
Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 11:28 PMThe more these Separatists open their mouths, the more ludicrous they appear. The Seps here at least have an excuse - drinking Salmond's dirty bathwater in their basement dwelling ain't no fun. But McKelvie is being paid quite a wad (did she make some dish from selling the second home paid for?) - she illustrates just how incompetent a lot the Separatist MSP are....

Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 09:34 PMWell a bit of an out there comment, yet its a problem that the SNP MSP could be avoided with the release of details by the SNP.

Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 09:33 PM25 sm753 Err, Hong Kong still uses the HK$, not the Yuan. And Taiwan uses the NT$, not the Yuan. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Really HK with a population of 7m, and Tawian (23m) have successful independent globally traded currencies... who would have thought it.

Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 04:56 PM"Thicko" McKelvie at it again - a one-woman advert for the stupidity of Nattism. Has she worked out the difference between "million" and "billion" yet?

Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 04:52 PM18 "Not a bad idea actually, it works for Taiwan & Hong Kong, so there you have three of the worlds greatest economies." --------------------------------- Err, Hong Kong still uses the HK$, not the Yuan. And Taiwan uses the NT$, not the Yuan. Nil points for "Electric Hermit". Why are Nats so stupid?

Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 04:37 PMAn independent Scotland will use the pound and have restrictive budgetary demands as the countries of Europe now have. That has already been established. If it wants a lender of last resort then it will have to agree with Westminster on this and the BOE, which answers to Westminster.the agreements will be collateral based or tight fiscal control from the bank. That has already been established. It can then choose another currency if it wishes. It does seem fact though that the SNP announce what other people have agreed to without any agreement in the hope that it will turn into fact. This is a strategy which will backfire on them and they should have a clear economic plan and publish it for all to see, so that they can decide on their vote.

Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 02:50 PMLike every Unionist Politician I've ever met this lot have had a complete humour and Brain bypass. No matter what any SNP member says, they don't hear, as they are too busy thinking up the most negative thing they can say in reply! The Tories and Liberals in Scotland are an irrelevance, but Labour took an almighty drubbing at the last Election for using the very same tactics. Babies and Animals learn from their mistakes, anyone who doesn't deserves no consideration whatsoever. And certainly, no votes!
