No guarantee on resources for policing

JUSTICE secretary Kenny MacAskill has warned police officers he cannot give guarantees on resources in the face of looming spending cuts.

However, he appealed for everyone to work together to ensure the continuation of high-class policing.

In a speech to the Association of Scottish Police Superintendents, he said: "As a government, we have demonstrated our solid commitment to a well-resourced police service. Funding is at a record level.

"While forces have responded well in meeting and exceeding 'efficient government' targets in recent years, it is now more important than ever that all opportunities for efficiency are taken and that any waste or duplication is removed."

"We should be under no illusion that turbulent times are ahead. I wish I could stand here with guarantees for the future – I can't.

"We can fight amongst ourselves, or realise that we are on same side and work together to ensure that our high-class policing service continues."
