NICOLA Sturgeon yesterday laughed off criticism of her expensive wet weather wardrobe by blaming her husband for buying her a Barbour jacket for Christmas.

The First Minister’s Sloane Ranger-inspired outfit complete with Hunter wellies was the subject of much comment when she visit flood victims in Port Elphinstone, near Inverurie.

One newspaper website expressed surprise that the “socialist” politician was wearing a jacket typical of the type worn by the huntin’ n’ shootin’ set, which cost £179. Her Women’s Balmoral Lady Neoprene Wellington boots were thought to cost £130.

Comparisons were made with the £13 Asda wellies worn by David Cameron in an attempt to make him appear a man of the people.

Sturgeon responded to the reports with a light-hearted tweet, saying: “I blame Peter Murrell [her husband]. He bought me the Barbour jacket for Christmas a couple of years ago.”

This revelation prompted one Twitter-using wag to remark: “Why is Sturgeon’s wardrobe SO last season.”

While the Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser tweeted: “Is this what passes for news?”
