The Glasgow East MP Natalie McGarry will provide financial documents to the SNP this week following claims that thousands of pounds have been unaccounted for from a party bank account.

Ms McGarry’s solicitor said the MP had contacted the SNP’s Glasgow Regional Association (GRA) after it was reported she was under investigation because £4,127.62 of GRA spending could not be explained.

The SNP denied the reports issuing a one-line statement saying: “There is nothing at present to suggest that money cannot be accounted for.”

A report in an independence-supporting newspaper claimed Ms McGarry, who has resigned the SNP whip, was at the centre of an investigation into the GRA bank account, which she was the main signatory for.

Last night Ms McGarry’s solicitor Aamer Anwar said: “There were a number of significant inaccuracies published in today’s National. Ms McGarry has been in contact with the GRA and all the necessary documentation will be provided to them this week.”

According to reports, delegates at a recent meeting of the GRA were told the money was marked “other payments”. It was reported there were no receipts for them.

Ms McGarry was elected as the SNP MP for Glasgow East in May last year. She resigned the party whip in November when Women For Independence went to police over money missing from their accounts.

Ms McGarry, who was in charge of finance of the group, was unable to account for about £30,000 of missing donations. After months of questioning by members of WFI she eventually donated £6,000 of her own money.

The MP has always insisted she has done nothing wrong.
