MSP praises rugby's role in economy

RUGBY'S importance to Edinburgh and the wider Scottish economy must not to be underestimated, Labour MSP Sarah Boyack said today.

The Edinburgh Central representative said the game not only encouraged a healthy lifestyle but also generated millions of pounds for the Capital.

Speaking ahead of a reception she is hosting in the Scottish Parliament tonight to highlight the work of the sports governing body in Scotland, Scottish Rugby, she said: "Good performances from the Scotland team in the recent autumn tests have generated a buzz about rugby, but the achievements of Scottish Rugby extend beyond the on-field actions of the sport's elite players. Economically, the impact of Scottish Rugby must not be ignored."

She highlighted research by Napier University last year, which had estimated matches at Murrayfield for the 2008/09 season would bring 50 million net spending to the Edinburgh economy, benefiting all kinds of businesses in the area.

Ms Boyack said investment in the grassroots of the game had resulted in increased participation.

Figures released by Scottish Rugby show that around 20,000 youngsters are now playing rugby, a rise of 24 per cent since 2006, while adult participation is also on the rise.

She also praised Scottish Rugby's work in local communities, with dedicated community development officers recruiting and retaining rugby players, coaches, referees and volunteers.
