MSP blasts 'a tax hike too far' for bingo halls
LOTHIANS SNP MSP Shirley-Anne Somerville claims local bingo halls may be at risk because of a tax rise imposed by Chancellor Alistair Darling.
The rate of duty paid by licensed bingo clubs increased from 15 per cent to 22 per cent last month, while duty on other forms of gambling including sports betting, casino and online poker and football pools remains at 15 per cent.
Ms Somerville said: "The bingo club is part of the social fabric of communities, providing a safe form of social entertainment which is particularly important for women and older people.
"I am concerned this may be a tax hike too far for many clubs struggling during the recession."
