MP cries foul over standard of refereeing

BILL Tynan, the Labour MP for Hamilton South, tabled a Commons motion yesterday criticising the quality of refereeing in the Euro 2004 football tournament.

It does not specifically mention Swiss referee Urs Meier, who disallowed Sol Campbell’s goal which would have put England through to the semi-finals, but few will be in doubt the MP - backed by five other backbenchers - had him in mind when they demanded the football authorities took action to stop ‘bad’ referees ruining more games.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that Mr Meier has had to receive police protection after getting death threats from England fans angered by his decision in the game against Portugal.
