MP calls for end to Euro 'farce'
LOTHIANS-BASED Euro MP David Martin today called for an end to the "costly farce" of the monthly trek by the European Parliament between Brussels and Strasbourg.
The parliament is meeting in Brussels this week because the ceiling of the main chamber in Strasbourg collapsed during the summer recess and is still being repaired.
But Mr Martin said the situation underlined the waste of money involved in the normal arrangement which sees Europe's 785 MEPs and around 4000 staff decant from Brussels once a month and make the 300-mile trip to Strasbourg.
Mr Martin said: "The costly farce which is the monthly trek from Brussels to Strasbourg must end. As long as we have to travel to Strasbourg, people will rightly say that the EU is wasting money."
