MacAskill rejects call to pay MoD bill
KENNY MacAskill, the justice secretary, yesterday said Scotland should not be made to pick up a £370,000 bill from the Ministry of Defence for policing two major summits.
The MoD claims it is owed 320,000 by Tayside Police in relation to the G8 summit at Gleneagles in 2005, as well as 50,000 from Fife Police for the British-Irish summit in St Andrews in 2006.
Mr MacAskill has written to the Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, and the Defence Secretary, Des Browne. He said: "This government fully supports the aims of both summits. The dispute, if there is one, is between governments – not with our police forces."
