Lib Dems pick Simon Hughes as party's new deputy
SIMON Hughes was last night unveiled as the new deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats.
The former party president beat his only rival, Tim Farron, in an election by fellow MPs.
After being chosen, Mr Hughes appeared alongside Lib Dem leader and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg on the steps of the House of Commons.
He said he would "keep the flag flying high for the things we stand for, a fairer Britain, more equality, a greener future. Clear policies for which people will want to vote for us in the future as they have in the past."
The contest was called after Vince Cable stood down to focus on his government job as Secretary for Business, Innovation and Skills.
Party members were offered the choice between the old and the new, with Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Hughes up against Westmorland MP Mr Farron, who is not well known outside the party, but is seen as a bright prospect for the future.
However, Mr Hughes, who is from the left of the party in the coalition, cruised to victory last night.
His aides said he had backing from more than half of the Lib Dems' 57 MPs – including Mr Cable.
Mr Farron had support from 12 MPs – including former leader Sir Menzies Campbell.
Mr Hughes could now become a "lightning rod" for discontent within the Lib Dems about the coalition deal with the Conservatives.
Neither candidate was awarded a job in the government, and both have suggested that the party should have "shadow" ministers for departments where it is not represented.
