Labour want police armed with cameras
LABOUR today called on the Scottish Government to give police officers across Scotland head or body cameras to record incidents in the course of their work.
The party said the cameras would help ensure evidence was recorded at the scene of a crime and make convictions easier in cases of assaults against officers.
Scottish Labour's community safety spokesman, Paul Martin, said: "Bodycams could be a great tool both in the fight against crime but also in protecting police officers.
"They will deter crime and disorder, gather evidence and provide corroboration as well as showing openness and accountability.
"Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill should ensure that we move to a situation where officers have body cameras."
He said with assaults against police officers approaching 7000 a year there was no time for prevarication.
