VETERAN Labour MP and former government minister Michael Meacher has died after suffering a short illness, it was confirmed today.
The 75-year-old Labour politician had been in the Commons since 1970 and served as an environment minister under Tony Blair.
Mr Meacher, the MP for Oldham West and Royton, also served in the frontbench teams of Labour leaders John Smith and Neil Kinnock.
The former minister retained his seat with 14,738 majority in May’s General Election.
Peter Dean, Mr Meacher’s office manager, said: “We are extremely sad and it has been quite a short illness he has had and we just don’t know the details at present.
“We are extremely sad for his family but all of his staff here at his office have worked with him for 20 years so it is almost like a family bereavement for us.”
