Jack's fashion faux pas raises a pretty Penny

PENNY Lancaster, the underwear model, has failed in a bid to buy Jack McConnell’s infamous pin-striped kilt for her partner, Rod Stewart.

Lancaster bid 8,000 for the First Minister’s kilt at a charity auction in Glasgow last night but was beaten by a mystery buyer who offered 10,000 for the most-talked-about piece of national dress in Scotland.

Whether Lancaster’s rock star partner would have asked Do You Think I’m Sexy? after trying it on will now never be known.

Mr McConnell was pilloried when he appeared in the short kilt with a baggy white shirt at a fashion event in New York in April. The Edinburgh firm behind Howie Nicklesby’s design, Geoffrey (Tailor), donated the kilt for the Entrepreneurial Exchange Ball in Glasgow’s Hilton Hotel.

The ball raised more than 600,000 for children’s charities. A portrait of Henrik Larsson by Peter Howson and a pair of Euro 2004 final tickets both raised 40,000.
