Hyslop welcomes the launch of chartered teachers' body

EDUCATION Secretary Fiona Hyslop today welcomed the launch of a professional body representing Scotland's chartered teachers, but defended her decision to review their role.

The new category of chartered teacher was established by the last Scottish Executive to reward experienced teachers who wanted a challenging career without them having to leave the classroom.

Last year, Ms Hyslop asked HM Inspectorate of Education to undertake a review, saying more clarity was needed on the contribution chartered teachers could and should be making to schools.

Today, she said the initial results of the review were likely to come forward this summer, with a fuller analysis next year.
