Hain did not break code but inquiries will continue
PETER Hain, the under-fire Work and Pensions Secretary, has been cleared of breaking the ministerial code.
Sir Gus O'Donnell, the Cabinet Secretary, has said he is "satisfied" that none of the donations totalling 103,000 received by Mr Hain for his failed deputy leadership campaign conflicted with his ministerial duties.
Mr Hain has insisted that he had discussed all the donations with his permanent secretary, Sir Leigh Lewis, and been assured there were no conflicts.
However investigations are still continuing into his accounts, by the Electoral Commission and the Parliamentary Standards' Commissioner. A police inquiry has also still not been ruled out.
Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister, has publicly endorsed his work.
