Clinton tells Brown to look on the bright side

BILL Clinton, the former United States president, gave Gordon Brown some advice yesterday: lighten up.

Mr Clinton suggested that the Chancellor - who is struggling to shed his dour image - should remember Labour's achievements as he approaches 10 Downing Street.

"I've seen people say Labour is getting a bit long in the tooth. But if you live where I live and you look across the Atlantic it does not look that way," Mr Clinton told Mr Brown at a joint speech in London. "You should see yourselves as others do. You should lighten up: you're doing really well."

Meanwhile, Tony Blair angrily slapped down speculation about when he will leave Downing Street, a question that has dogged his tour of Australia and New Zealand. "I really think we have had enough of this one," the Prime Minister snapped at reporters accompanying him yesterday.
