Church of Scotland Moderator's plea to new coalition government
THE next Moderator of the Church of Scotland has urged the UK Government to care for those hit hardest by the recession.
The Rev John Christie, who takes over the Kirk's top job next week, said he wanted to "affirm" the relationship between church and state.
But he said: "Given that we're likely to be facing quite severe cutbacks in finance to try to re-grasp the budget deficit, I hope the new government with its new ways might be willing to be careful of the needs of those in our society for whom this recession is the hardest."
The Tory/Liberal Democrat coalition at Westminster was a "pragmatic solution" to the result of the general election, said Mr Christie, although he insisted it was too early to pass judgement on the administration.
"We have to wait and see how that pans out over the coming months before we'll know whether we feel that this was a good thing or not."
