Call for rock collection to stay in Capital
CITY MP Nigel Griffiths has called on the UK Government to intervene to stop plans to move a unique collection of hundreds of thousands of rocks up to 400 million years old from Edinburgh to the East Midlands.
The British Geological Survey wants to transfer the massive archive – all the rock samples recovered from offshore UK oil and gas wells since exploration began in the 1960s – from the current stores in Gilmerton and Loanhead 300 miles to Keyworth, near Nottingham.
A group of 19 leading scientists and industry figures have written to Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, saying the archive is in constant use by people from oil and gas companies, many of them based in Aberdeen.
Mr Griffiths, Labour MP for South Edinburgh, said: "This closure is short-sighted and very damaging. We have a world-class facility here."
